Natural History

Leopard geckos are native to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Southern Asia and parts of India, inhabiting dry, rocky deserts and grassland. Pet Leopard geckos grow to be around 20cm - 25cm in length and have an average lifespan of around 20 years, but some live much longer.

Many people think that Leopard geckos are nocturnal, but they are in fact crepuscular and active during the morning and evening. They have a few interesting features, such as the ability to drop their tails when stressed or captured. The tail grows back, but it is never the same or as attractive as the original. They’re a terrestrial lizard and don’t have sticky feet like most geckos, which means that they spend most of their time on the ground. Also unlike most geckos, they have moveable eyelids. They’re one of the few types of gecko that can blink!

Leopard geckos are probably the most popular pet lizard in Europe and America and it’s easy to see why. They’re small and easy to handle and they’re easy to keep if you have the right equipment. As most people believe that Leopard geckos do not need UVB lighting, it is relatively cheap to set up an enclosure.
